Window Top Treatments

At Coastal Luxe Interiors, we believe the best interior designs are about the details. That is why our offerings include window top treatments. While cornices and valances might seem like small details in the grand scheme of interior design, they can make a big difference. Adding top treatments can transform your window coverings from plain to luxurious and draw attention to any room’s windows. At Coastal Luxe Interiors, we custom make top treatments of all kinds that can help you take your interior design to the next level.

Types of Window Top Treatments

There are two main types of window top treatments, each with its own distinct style benefits. At Coastal Luxe Interiors, our fabrication team can create both custom valances and custom cornices so you can pick the top treatment that speaks to you the most.

Valances

These fabric window top treatments are the least structured option. Valance curtains are constructed from pieces of fabric that usually run the length of a decorative rod. The material has several different draping styles, ranging from simple swag, which has a single center dip, to asymmetrical Morland drapes, to complicated buttons and bells pleats. The fabric can be softly folded or sharply pleated. The different gathering styles also create different shapes at the bottom of the top treatments, allowing you to create clean, modern lines or decorative scallops and shapes. The range of style options will enable valances to be both a casual and sophisticated top treatment option. Valances also often feature jabots, a long fold of fabric that frames the sides of your windows. Some larger valances will even add jabots to the center for additional elegance.

Cornices

These top treatments are constructed from a solid cornice board, which creates a solid underlying structure. These wooden boxes are affixed over the top of the window, creating an added architectural element in your home. Cornices can be constructed of stained or painted wood. This cornice style is more traditional and adds a classic opulence to any space. They can feature carved elements like swoops and steps that can match other wooden details in your home. If the look of wood isn’t your style, cornices can also be covered in fabric. These softer cornices usually feature a squarer top but can have any number of shapes along the bottom. Popular fabric cornice shapes include arches, steps, and scallops. Because cornice boards completely hide the top of your windows, they are also an easy way to make your windows seem taller.

Why Use Window Top Treatments

  • Decoration: Cornices and valances are a great way to add visual interest to your windows. The decorative shapes and fabric options will catch the eye and add depth to your interior design. Our window top treatments are also fully customizable to fit your interior design aesthetic.
  • Create Space: Adding cornice boards or valance curtains to your windows makes them look taller than they are. This, in turn, makes your ceiling seem taller, which creates a larger sense of space. This trick is especially good for homes with lower ceilings or darker colors on the walls.
  • Light Control: Often, window treatments, and coverings have a slight gap at the top where they are installed into the frame. Cornices and valances help to cover that gap and block out the light. They are also suitable for adding light control to windows that don’t otherwise have a covering.
  • Hide Hardware: One of the main reasons to pair window top treatments with other window coverings is to hide the hardware. Cornices and valances can completely conceal drapery rods, blind headrails, roller shade cassettes, and the motors and battery packs needed for automated window systems.
